San Diego
About 250 Marines and 12 helicopters from Camp Pendleton will descend on San Diego this evening and Friday morning to conduct routine training exercises, Staff Sgt. John Midgette said Wednesday.
The Marines will fly over parts of downtown as well as over the water, the spokesman said. “We can’t do this at Camp Pendleton because it’s ground we know. We like to fly over unfamiliar urban terrain.”
Such training has been routinely conducted since 1985 at various sites across the nation. It is probably the first such exercise to occur over San Diego, Midgette said.
The helicopters will include two UH1N Hueys, two CH53 Super Stallions, six CH46 Sea Knights and two AH1W Cobras.
