2 L.A. Students Win Merit Scholarships for Blacks

Two Los Angeles Unified School District high school seniors are among 540 black students who have been awarded Achievement Scholarships in the 1990 National Merit Scholarship program for Outstanding Negro Students, the district has announced.
Edray H. Goins, valedictorian at George Washington Preparatory High School, will receive a $2,000 scholarship sponsored by the Arco Foundation. He plans a career in theoretical physics.
Obi A. Ndefo, a senior at the Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies, Pasteur Site, will receive a $2,000 scholarship sponsored by contributions from corporate and individual donors. Ndefo, a recipient of the Yale Book Award and the CalTech Math Award, plans to continue his studies in psychology and theater.
