King of the Genre

Films from King novels have had mixed success. “Carrie” (1976), the first King adaptation, earned Oscar nominations and $15 million at the box office--a nice figure for the time. But there have been bombs, like “Cat’s Eye” (1985, $8.8 million) and “Maximum Overdrive” (1986, $6 million). Hits include “Stand by Me” ($51 million) and “Pet Sematary” (1989, $57 million).
A new title joins the roster on May 4 when Paramount releases “Tales From the Dark Side: The Movie,” an anthology that includes a King-scripted episode, “The Cat from Hell.”
