Malathion Spraying

Re “Malathion Opponents say Tourists are Unaware of Spraying Danger” (March 23): Representatives from three levels of government along with concerned citizens have requested the state to require hotels/motels in malathion spray areas to notify their guests at registration on spray nights that spraying is taking place. This notification would allow guests to decide whether they want to stay in the spray area.

This seems like not only a reasonable request but the only responsible thing to do.

It is my understanding that hotel/motel guests are technically “residents” during their lodging in a particular area. These visitors should receive the same state notification that has been given to local residents. It would be negligent to do otherwise. The quoted response from the California Department of Food and Agriculture spokesperson was disturbing. She “sees no need for the state to require or even encourage hotels/and motels to notify their guests. . . .” Ann Hoffman, director of tourism development for the Anaheim Visitor and Convention Bureau, agreed with that inane comment.

As an Anaheim resident of 12 years, I’m very much aware that the city of Anaheim’s claim to fame is the tourist business. To think that a spokesperson for the Anaheim Visitor and Convention Bureau would state that she’s in agreement shows total disregard for the welfare of the people she is specifically hired to serve.
