Wesson, Aztecs Throw Blanks at San Jose State--Twice

Michelle Wesson increased her scoreless inning string to 21 innings by pitching a pair of 1-0 upsets over No. 11 San Jose State as the injury depleted Aztecs swept a Big West softball double header at SDSU Saturday.

Wesson, who played at Christian High School, threw a five hitter in both victories. Wesson (11-8) had a 37 1/3 scoreless-inning streak earlier this season.

The Aztecs (12-19, 4-7) fielded just a dozen players because of injuries. San Jose State is 20-10 and 4-4.

Jennifer Droback had the RBI single in the first game and freshman walk on, Tracy Stowe of Mt. Carmel High, had the game winner in the second game.

MEN’S TENNIS

The University of San Diego upset second-ranked Cal, 5-1, in the fifth-place match of the Blue-Gray National Collegiate Championships at Montgomery, Ala. USD Coach Ed Collins called it USD’s biggest victory of the year.

Jose Luis Noriega, ranked fifth in the nation, defeated Cal’s Bent Peterson, 6-4, 6-0, in No. 1 singles. USD’s Dan Mattera, ranked 39th, upset No. 31 Doug Eisenman, 6-2, 6-4, in No. 2 singles.

J.R. Edwards defeated former San Dieguito High star Carl Chang, 6-2, 7-6, in No. 3 singles. Chang, the older brother of Michael Chang, was the 1987 San Diego Section champion.

No. 22 USD ran its record to 18-4, while Cal dropped to 14-4. The Bears had defeated USD, 5-4, earlier this year in Berkeley.

Point Loma Nazarene defeated Cal State Los Angeles, 8-1, in Los Angeles. PLNC’s Hans Hoegstadt downed Bobby Towery at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-1.

BASEBALL

UC San Diego was outhit by Wisconsin Whitewater in both games of a double header in La Jolla but managed 3-2 and 3-1 victories nonetheless.

Mike Morgan (4-0) won the first game with Dan Eaton picking up a save, despite the Tritons being outhit, 9-4, by Whitewater (7-6). In the second game, J.J. Fisher (1-3) pitched a five-hitter as UCSD (14-8-2) scored a run in the seventh and two in the eighth on just three hits.

Azusa Pacific swept a double header from Point Loma Nazarene, 6-1 and 6-0, in Azusa. PLNC (12-16-1) had just four hits in each game. Azusa improved to 18-9.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC San Diego opened defense of its Pacific Coast Volleyball Conference title with victories over Santa Clara, 13-15, 15-7, 15-12, 15-7, and UC Santa Cruz, 15-6, 15-7, 15-11, in the Bay Area. They were the first victories of the season for UCSD (2-15, 2-0) because the Tritons had played nothing but top 20 teams until Saturday.

John Lim had 16 kills against Santa Clara (7-11, 3-2) and Nate Brown 14. Brown added 19 kills against UC Santa Cruz (18-13, 1-5).

TRACK AND FIELD

The Point Loma Nazarene men’s team took 14 out of 19 events, and the women’s team 11 of 16, in a home tri-meet against Claremont and Biola. The scores were PLNC 95, Claremont 61.5 and Biola 41.5 in the men’s meet, PLNC 86, Claremont 48 and Biola 36 in the women’s.

PLNC’s men’s 400 meter relay team qualified for the NAIA national meet with a time of 41.66 seconds. Goshu Tadese just missed four minutes in the 1,500 meters at 4:00.15. Dan Raatjes high jumped 7-feet. Ronnie Skold won the long jump (21-10 1/2) and the 400 hurdles (56.73), and Christian Andreasson the triple jump (43-6 1/2) and the javelin (173-8).

Double winners for the women, include Aminda Sloan in the 100 (12.98) and 200 (26.29), Alicia Harasty in the long jump (16-3) and the javelin (119-5) and Mary Guinan in the shot (36-7) and discus (115-11).

San Diego State’s men’s team finished third and the women second in a four-way meet at UC Irvine. Brigham Young was first in both.

For the Aztecs, Darren Huston ran 47.38 in the 400 and Keith Davis 53.44 in the 400 hurdles, and Charles Tyler leaped 23-0 3/4 in the long jump. Gaylen Ames had women’s team season-bests in the triple jump (41-6) and 400 hurdles (1:00.21). Darla Vaughn won the 100 hurdles with a 13.91.
