A family of three escaped uninjured from a burning house in Poway, fire officials said Tuesday.

The blaze raced through the single-family home in the 14000 block of Durhullen Drive a little after 6 a.m. Tuesday. By the time 27 firefighters from Poway and San Diego brought the fire under control in about 20 minutes, 90% of the house was damaged. The loss was put at $400,000.

According to fire officials, the owners’ son, who is a college student, heard a humming noise in the air conditioning system and saw smoke coming from the vents. He woke his parents, Henry and Marian Ponsford, and escorted them to the back yard, said Poway battalion chief Garry MacPherson. The son’s name was unavailable.

MacPherson said an electrical flaw in the fan’s motor ignited the fire.
