The NCAA announced basketball rules changes to prevent intentional fouling at the end of games. After a team’s 10th foul of each half, players will be given two free throws instead of a one-and-one. Players fouled in the act of shooting a three-pointer will be awarded three free throws.

The NCAA decided not to follow a recommendation to lengthen the three-point shot made by the National Assn. of Basketball Coaches. The line will remain at 19 feet 9 inches, although conferences can experiment next year with the international distance of 20-6.

“Why fool around with something that’s been extremely successful?” asked Edward Steitz, secretary of the NCAA men’s basketball rules committee.

Conferences can try an experimental no-foul-out rule, in which a foul committed by a player with six or more will result in three tries to make two free throws.
