BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Pinch Hit in Seventh Keeps No.1 Ocean View Rolling

Pinch-hitter Richard Jones’ two-run single in the seventh inning gave Ocean View High School a 2-1 victory over Fountain Valley in a Sunset League baseball game Tuesday at Ocean View.

Kevin Bill opened the seventh with a single for Ocean View (11-2, 6-0), the top-ranked team in Orange County. After a fly out, Eric Schaff doubled down the right-field line, bringing up Jones.

Duane Page (6-0) went seven innings, allowing four hits and striking out five.

In other Sunset League games:

Marina 6, Westminster 2--Mark Newfield went three for three with a home run and four RBIs for host Marina (5-7-1, 3-3). Sean Connors (2-1) pitched five innings, allowing two hits and striking out six for the Vikings.

Edison 8, Huntington Beach 2--Darren Brink had a three-run double in the seventh and scored on a throwing error to give visiting Edison an 8-4 lead. Edison (8-4, 3-3) had five hits and six stolen bases. Phil Jensen pitched four innings for the victory and Jim Futami pitched the final three for the save.

In the Century League:

El Modena 9, Villa Park 2--Mike Vermillion had a home run, a double and four RBIs and Ken Menell (2-0) allowed five hits and struck out four for host El Modena (5-5, 3-3).

Canyon 6, Santa Ana 3--Ryan Puskas had a solo home run in the second inning and an RBI single in the seventh inning that broke a 3-3 tie at Santa Ana. Chris Pena drove in two runs with a single later in the inning. Brandon Potts went three for three and Lee Torres (2-2) struck out five for Canyon (6-5, 5-0-1). Dan Alzazer went three for three and Octavio Medina went three for four for Santa Ana (1-5 in league).

Foothill 3, Santa Ana Valley 1--John Scardino (3-3) pitched a four-hitter for visiting Foothill (7-4-1, 4-1-1). Neil Garcia had two hits for Foothill.

In the Empire League:

Katella 10, Loara 2--Danny Briggs, Eric Boyd and Chris Reed each had two hits for visiting Katella (8-5, 3-3), which scored four runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings.

Esperanza 4, El Dorado 1--Junior Shade Summers (6-0) pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief for the victory. Erickson Dumaual had three hits and scored a run, and John Pitts had two hits for Esperanza (10-2, 6-0). El Dorado is 8-5, 2-4.

In the Olympic League:

Ontario Christian 8, Capistrano Valley Christian 2--Mike Salazar struck out 14 and hit two home runs and had four RBIs for visiting Ontario Christian (2-3 in league). Capistrano Valley is 6-4, 1-4.

Whittier Christian 19, Whitney 7--Brent Tucker and Justin Bohannon each went two for three with three RBIs and Darin Halverson doubled and homered for host Whittier Christian (9-1, 5-0).

Orange Lutheran 6, Valley Christian 3--Kent Dowding (4-1) pitched seven innings for visiting Orange Lutheran (8-3, 4-1). Phil Matheson had a three-run home run in the first innings for Orange Lutheran. Mic Buehler had a solo home run in the third. He also had a double. Valley Christian is 9-1, 4-1.

Santa Margarita 11, Brethren 4--Joey Farris went three for four and David Nix doubled with the bases loaded in the fifth inning for three of his four RBIs for host Santa Margarita (4-7, 1-4). Marc Mosman (3-2) struck out seven in five innings for the Eagles.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 5, Costa Mesa 0--Matt Maffei (2-1) gave up one hit in five innings and Brian Kessler allowed three hits in two shutout innings for host Laguna Hills (9-4, 6-0). Tom Lloyd went two for three with an RBI.

Orange 8, Woodbridge 5--Rick Foster hit a two-run home run and Jeff Peterson went two for three with a three-run triple for visiting Orange (5-7, 4-2). Ruben Hernandez (5-2) struck out eight and raised his record to 3-1 in league.

In the Sea View League:

Tustin 13, University 3--Ryan Relph hit two home runs and had three RBIs for host Tustin (11-1, 6-0). Brian Gill had two hits and three RBIs and Dan Baker (6-0) pitched four innings for victory for Tustin.

In the South Coast League:

Dana Hills 5, Mission Viejo 0--Host Dana Hills (8-5, 4-2) scored three runs in the first inning on an RBI double by Lance Marks, a walk with the bases loaded and a groundout. The rest of the runs came in the fourth on a two-run single by Scott Holty. Mike Robertson (3-2) allowed five hits, struck out five and walked none.

Capistrano Valley 20, San Clemente 5--Jonathan Petke was two for three with a home run and five RBIs, Mike Lavin was three for four with a home run and two RBIs and Dan Zamora was three for four with three RBIs for host Capistrano Valley (5-6-1, 1-4-1). David Guillen also had a home run for the Cougars.

El Toro 2, Irvine 1--Greg Pearce (3-1) pitched a four-hitter with four strikeouts and host El Toro scored single runs in the first and second innings. Bo Haley had an RBI single in the first and Greg Everett had a sacrifice fly in the second for El Toro (8-5, 4-2).

In the Arrowhead League:

Southern California Christian 13, La Sierra 0--Pedro Tulido and Matt Kaudy each had two hits for visiting SCC (8-2, 5-0).

In the Academy League:

Liberty Christian 22, St. Michael’s 3 (5 innings, mercy rule)--Todd Price and Mark Baltodano each hit home runs for host Liberty Christian. Baltodano (4-2) also had eight strikeouts.
