Golf was the last thing on Patty Sheehan’s mind last October.

She was at Candlestick Park on Oct. 17 to watch Game 3 of the World Series between the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics, when the devastating Bay Area earthquake hit.

Sheehan’s home in Scotts Valley, near Santa Cruz, was close to the epicenter of the quake that measured 7.1 on the Richter scale.

“As I drove up the road, I looked at my vegetable garden,” Sheehan said as she prepared for today’s opening round of the Red Robin Kyocera Inamori tournament at StoneRidge Country Club.

“There were two wooden cows still standing up in the garden. It was like a victory. Then when I opened the front door of the house, there was about a four-inch gap between the front door and the rest of the house.”

The damage to her home, estimated at $275,000, was bad enough. But then she discovered she didn’t have earthquake insurance.

Sheehan has won $144,519 this season, helping rebuild the house.

Her competition this week includes Betsy King, coming off last week’s win at the Nabisco Dinah Shore, and two-time Red Robin champion Ayako Okamoto.
