UCLA fullback Mark Estwick, a two-year starter, has left school for personal reasons, an athletic department spokesman said on the eve of spring practice which starts today.

A strong blocker, Estwick ran for 374 yards and scored eight touchdowns in three seasons after making the team as a walk-on from Loyola High School.

Maury Toy, Kevin Smith and Kaleaph Carter are expected to compete for Estwick’s position.

Coach Terry Donahue has four new assistants, including offensive coordinator Homer Smith, and a new defensive alignment as the Bruins attempt to rebound from a 3-7-1 season.

Transfers Arnold Ale, a linebacker from Notre Dame, and Mike Chalenski, a defensive end from Pitt, are No. 1 on the depth chart.

Returning starter Bret Johnson, a sophomore, is listed No. 1 at quarterback, but is expected to face strong challenges from junior Jim Bonds and redshirt freshmen Tommy Maddox and Bert Emanuel.

Seniors Roman Phifer and Damion Lyons, suspended from the team after being convicted of misdemeanor battery charges last September, have been reinstated and will participate in spring drills.
