Is Something Wrong When the Best Team Wins the NCAA Title?

Share

It is a dark day for the NCAA. The team with the greatest basketball talent just won its basketball tournament. Not a doctor, lawyer or astrophysicist in the bunch. What a disgusting sight to see Larry Johnson, Stacey Augmon and Nevada Las Vegas craft the biggest blowout in NCAA championship history without also being proficient in comparative literature.

I would never dream of hiring a gardener without a political science degree. Why should I watch an athletic event where the only thing going for the victors is their breathtaking skill and unquestioned superiority in the endeavor in which they participate?

It is for this reason that I only watch basketball and football--never baseball or hockey. The thought of the NHL and major league baseball drawing athletes from minor and junior leagues, instead of from academia, makes me shudder. Only one hockey player (Randy Gregg) has a medical degree--and until this Wayne Gretzky character gets one, I have no interest in watching him skate.
