COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Fresno’s Wolf Takes Bite Out of UC Irvine

Steve Wolf struck out 10 and walked none to lead Fresno State to a 2-1 victory over UC Irvine in a Big West Conference baseball game at Fresno Saturday.

Mike Noel scored when Chris Gonzales hit into a double play to give Fresno State (25-11, 5-0 in conference) a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Irvine (23-15, 1-4) tied it in the fourth, when Ray Walker and Chris Gallego hit back-to-back doubles.

In the bottom of the inning, Todd Johnson hit a one-out double and Jeff Borgesse hit a grounder to the hole that bounced off shortstop John Damush’s arm, allowing Johnson to score from second.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball:

Chapman 6, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 2--Tom Allison had four hits and scored twice and Mike Giuseffi had four hits, scored and had two RBIs for visiting Chapman (22-13, 12-5).

In nonconference men’s tennis:

San Diego 5, UC Irvine 2--Nineteenth-ranked San Diego (20-4) upset No. 14 Irvine (14-10) at San Diego. Richard Lubner defeated J.R. Edwards, 7-6, 6-1, for Irvine.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

UC Irvine 9, San Jose State 0--Stacy Cadigan defeated Patty Cornelius, 6-2, 6-3, to lead visiting Irvine (7-18).

In Big West Conference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 1-3, Hawaii 0-0--Yvette Hernandez scored on Malia Ouzts’ single in the seventh to lead Fullerton over host Hawaii (13-21, 3-15) in the first game. In the second game, Missy Coombes had one hit, scored and had an RBI for Fullerton (32-9, 12-3).

In pool play of the Cal State Hayward softball tournament:

Chapman 1, Southern Utah 0 (8 innings)--Jackie Blake (16-3) pitched a one-hitter for Chapman (32-12). In an earlier game, Cal State Hayward defeated Chapman, 6-3. Hayward converted two walks, an error and a single into three runs in the third.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Azusa Pacific 5-4, Southern California College 0-1--Lisa Todd had a three-hitter, striking out 12, for host Azusa Pacific in the first game.

In National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics softball:

Cal Lutheran 8-4, Christ College Irvine 0-0--Tracy Schultz doubled for one of Christ College Irvine’s (20-17, 7-7) two hits in the first game.
