Ward Named Travel Section Executive Editor

Leslie A. Ward, a senior editor for the Los Angeles Times Magazine, has been named Travel Section executive editor. Travel Editor Jerry Hulse, who has directed the section for nearly three decades, will travel widely and continue to write major features and his column of tips.

Ward will be responsible for planning and executing all coverage in the section and for editing the twice-yearly Traveling in Style magazine. In addition, she will provide the section’s overall focus and set its tone, handling all administrative duties and assignments.

Before coming to The Times, Ward was sports editor, senior writer, Sunday magazine editor and Sunday style editor for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner. She has also been an editor and writer at New West magazine and West Coast bureau chief for US magazine. She has reported for the New York Times and Life magazine from their Los Angeles bureaus. She has a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in journalism from UCLA.

Hulse’s writing awards include the Melva C. Pederson Award for extraordinary journalistic achievement in the field of travel, and the Lowell Thomas Award. In 1987 he was awarded the French Legion of Honor.
