SDSU Home Runs Beat New Mexico

Brian Grebeck, Anthony Johnson and Bill Dunckel all hit home runs as San Diego State topped New Mexico, 11-4, in Albuquerque.

Grebeck and Johnson each had triples in addition to their home runs. Grebeck finished with two RBIs and Johnson had three.

Pitcher Eric Plantenberg went the distance and struck out 14 as SDSU improved to 28-12, 10-2 in the Western Athletic Conference. New Mexico fell to 16-19, 2-6.

USIU pitchers allowed 11 walks, seven of which scored, and lost, 12-4, at USC (27-11). Beto Rodriguez hit his fifth homer of the year for USIU (9-31-1).

GYMNASTICS

Mike Sivulka, 15, of Vista finished first overall in class 2-A at the Tucson Gymnastics Invitational over the weekend. Sivulka had a composite score of 49.45 and finished first in the pommel horse (8.4), fourth in the parallel bars (8.5), sixth in the high bar (7.8), seventh in still rings (7.6), ninth in floor exercise (8.8) and 22nd on the vault (8.35).

SOFTBALL

Arizona State scored only three runs in a doubleheader against USIU, but that was enough for a sweep, 2-0, 1-0. USIU fell to 20-22.

MEN’S TENNIS

No. 24 San Diego State was upset by unranked Cal State Long Beach, 5-2, in a match at Long Beach.
