FILLMORE : Groups Seek Permit to Sell Fireworks
More than a dozen organizations have requested permits to sell fireworks along California 126 in Fillmore, Fire Chief Pat Askren said Monday.
For most of the not-for-profit organizations, fireworks sales leading up the Fourth of July holiday provide a primary source of revenue.
“Some of them make over $30,000 in a week,” Askren said. “What other fund-raiser can you find that comes close?”
The holiday sales will also affect road improvement work.
State Department of Transportation Resident Engineer Jim Renshaw said his organization has come under pressure from city officials to have California 126 renovations completed before July 4.
“Our plan is to have the highway striped and complete before the 4th,” Renshaw said.
Renshaw said the traditionally brisk sales of fireworks have created traffic problems in the past. That congestion was a factor in a Caltrans decision to delay highway construction last year until after the holiday, Renshaw said.
