Gabe Ruelas Dealt First Professional Boxing Setback
Gabe Ruelas of North Hollywood sustained his first professional defeat Saturday when his elbow blew out and he was stopped in the seventh round of his scheduled 10-round fight against Jeff Franklin.
Ruelas, who fights out of the Goossen gym in Van Nuys, had been winning every round of the featherweight fight before he injured the right elbow in the sixth round on the undercard of the Michael Nunn-Marlon Starling middleweight title fight.
Ruelas (21-1) fought the last minute of the sixth round as a one-armed fighter, then came out in the seventh and attempted to fight with just one hand.
But the effort was futile and referee Richard Steele stopped the fight at 1 minute 5 seconds of the seventh after Ruelas had the elbow hit and fell down.
In another fight, Ruelas’ brother, Rafael, remained undefeated at 16-0 by stopping Art Hernandez at 1:34 of the first round.
