Charles Coody scored a hole in one and an 18th-hole eagle as he and Dale Douglass combined for a 13-under-par 59 and a five-stroke lead Thursday in the Legends of Golf at Austin, Tex.

Coody scored his ace with a 7-iron on the 142-yard third hole and capped his first-round in this better-ball event with a 15-foot putt for an eagle-3 on the 18th hole.

The 1971 Masters champion also scored five birdies at Barton Creek, a new venue for the 13-year-old event that is credited with providing the impetus for the start of golf’s Seniors Tour in a dramatic, televised playoff in 1980.

Chi Chi Rodriguez scored five of his team’s eight birdies, including those on the 17th and 18th holes, as he and Dave Hill put together a 64 and a share of second place with Miller Barber and Tom Shaw.

Lennie Clements, looking for his first PGA tournament victory after nine years, avoided the rough for most of the afternoon and shot a three-under-par 69 to take the first-round lead in the Greater Greensboro Open at Greensboro, N.C.

Clements hit 12 of 14 fairways, an edge on the Forest Oaks Country Club course because of rough that players described as U.S. Open-caliber.

Eight golfers were one shot back. They are two-time winning rookie Robert Gamez; 1985 GGO champion Joey Sindelar; Jim Gallagher Jr., who was in the first threesome of the day; Bobby Clampett, who has one victory in 10 years on the PGA Tour; David Edwards, whose last victory was the 1984 L.A. Open; Ted Schulz, Phil Blackmar and Lee Janzen.
