Choreographer Pearl Primus, professor of ethnic studies at Amherst College in Massachusetts, has been named Chancellor’s Distinguished Lecturer in Fine Arts at UC Irvine where she will begin a weeklong residency next Monday. Her lecture-demonstration on “Dance, Music and Related Arts of Africa” will be free to the public May 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the UCI Physical Sciences Lecture Hall. Born in Trinidad, Primas, 71, studied with such American modern dance pioneers as Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Hanya Holm and Charles Weidman and has performed her own choreography throughout the world.
