THE SIDELINES : Hall of Fame Guard Davies Dies

Bob Davies, a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame who led the Rochester Royals to NBL and NBA championships, has died of prostate cancer. He was 70.

Davies, who retired from basketball in 1955, died Sunday in a hospital in Hilton Head, S.C.

A native of Harrisburg, Pa., Davies earned All-America honors at Seton Hall, where he led the Pirates to a perfect 19-0 record as a sophomore in 1939-40. Seton Hall was 20-2 in 1940-41 and 16-3 in 1941-42.

After serving in the Navy, he joined Rochester for the 1945-46 season and helped lead the Royals to the National Basketball League championship. He was named the most valuable player in the NBL in 1946-47 and coached Seton Hall to a 24-3 record that season.

Davies, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound guard, helped Rochester capture the 1950-51 NBA championship with a 4-3 victory over New York in the final series.

Davies, who led the NBA in assists in 1948-49, was selected to play in four NBA All-Star Games and was a three-time first-team All-NBA selection.
