THE SIDELINES : Early Out for Steeb, Gustafsson

MONTE CARLO, Monaco — Seeded players Carl-Uwe Steeb of West Germany and Sweden’s Magnus Gustafsson were ousted from the $1-million Monte Carlo Open tennis tournament on the first day today.
Jonas Svensson of Sweden beat Steeb, the 10th seed, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, and Ronald Agenor of Haiti, ranked 45th in the world, ousted No. 15 seeded Gustafsson, 6-2, 6-2.
Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union beat Goran Prpic of Yugoslavia, 7-5, 6-3.
Stefan Edberg of Sweden and Boris Becker of West Germany, the No. 2 and No. 3 players in the world, received byes into the second round and will not play until later in the week.
The rich tournament in this tiny principality, offering $125,000 to the winner, attracted five of the top 10 players in the world. Andre Agassi of the United States was a late withdrawal although he was seeded No. 3. He was not replaced on the seeding list.
