Uwe Krupp of the Buffalo Sabres has been banned for 18 months from international play after failing a test for banned substances at the World Hockey Championships in Bern, Switzerland.

The ban will not affect Krupp’s status with the Sabres, because the substance found is not banned by the National Hockey League.

Krupp, a defenseman for the West German team, was found to have taken phentermine, a performance-boosting stimulant, team doctors said in a statement.

The United States routed Norway, 9-4, for its second consecutive victory but will still miss the medal round for the fourth time in a row.

Finland earned its first victory by beating winless West Germany, 4-2, in a meeting between two other teams headed for the relegation round.

The United States and Finland play Wednesday.
