15 Hurt in Disturbance at Pitchess Honor Rancho
About 40 inmates battled with mop and broom handles at the jail in Saugus, slightly injuring 15, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported Tuesday.
The disturbance broke out Monday night in a barracks at the Peter J. Pitchess Honor Rancho, Deputy Pat Hunter said. Deputies restored order in 15 minutes, and no deputies were injured.
Although the fight was between Latinos and blacks, a sheriff’s spokesman said that racial tensions were not believed to have been a cause. It appeared instead that the melee began when one inmate accused another of stealing his personal belongings “and then it escalated,” the spokesman said.
