SANTA ANA : Baby Killed by Car, Mother Badly Hurt

Share

A 3-month-old boy was killed and his mother critically injured Tuesday when a car hit them as the mother was carrying the infant across a busy street, authorities said.

The infant sustained major head injuries and was pronounced dead about 4:45 p.m. at UCI Medical Center in Orange, Santa Ana Police spokeswoman Maureen Thomas said.

The mother apparently was jaywalking across North Bristol Street near Memory Lane with her son in her arms when the driver of a white 1983 Chevrolet Camaro traveling southbound hit them, Thomas said.

“We have a lot of problems with people not crossing at Memory Lane because of a shopping mall that is around there,” Thomas said.

A preliminary investigation indicated that Sandy Woodberry, 44, of Santa Ana, the driver of the Camaro, was traveling at the speed limit just before the 4 p.m. accident, Thomas said. Woodberry was not cited.

Police were withholding the identities of mother and her son until relatives could be notified. The mother, who was also taken to UCI Medical Center with major head injuries, is believed to be in her early 20s, Thomas said.
