A Tujunga man was sentenced Thursday to 13 years in prison for shooting to death a man who he said stole his motorcycle and burglarized his house.
The sentence for Vanjlis D. Garafolo, 32, was the maximum allowed for voluntary manslaughter, a charge that he pleaded guilty to April 5 after prosecutors agreed to drop murder and assault charges against him. Garafolo also admitted using a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Police said Garafolo shot James A. Bailey, 29, in front of Bailey’s trailer in Sunland on the night of March 6, 1989. Although people were coming in and out of the trailer about the time of the shooting, no witnesses to the slaying were found, according to court records.
