The 5 Ls Led to Her Title of Ms. Senior America

Santa Ana resident Jane Lindsey, 68, who earlier was named Ms. Senior California, was crowned Ms. Senior America 1990 in Atlantic City, beating 29 other state candidates.

Lindsey played a violin solo, “Tea for Two,” during the talent competition and, in her interview portion, said her life is guided by five words: looking, listening, learning, loving and living.

Judges based their decision on an interview, evening gown, talent and inner beauty-philosophy of life to discover “a gracious lady who best exemplified the dignity, maturity and inner beauty of all senior Americans.”

The pageant was open to women 60 years or older.

Irvine Intermediate School teacher Jackie Taylor was presented the “I Make a Difference Award” by the Garden Grove Education Assn. for her volunteer work with Boy Scouts.

Taylor serves as district advancement chairman and is responsible for merit badges, Eagle Scout projects and awards to community leaders. She has been actively involved since 1977.

Corona del Mar High School journalism teacher Linda Mook was presented the Journalism Education Assn.’s Medal of Merit award for her contributions to the group’s activities and for her scholastic journalism activities.

Lisa Ernst, a senior at Edison High School in Huntington Beach, was named a recipient of the $1,000 Jostens Foundation Leader Scholarship award. An estimated 35,000 seniors competed nationwide, and only 300 were selected.

Costa Mesa High School junior honor student Naomi Stevens, 17, has been awarded a Youth Exchange Program scholarship and will study as an exchange student in Germany.

She will leave Aug. 2 to spend her senior year in a German high school and will receive all her instruction in German. She has studied the language for three years at Costa Mesa High.

She will live with a German family during her stay. The scholarship is awarded jointly by the U.S. government and the German government.

Lillian Stanley Holditch celebrated her 103rd birthday at a party in the Lake Forest Nursing Center that included balloons, long-stemmed roses, a chocolate cake and piano music. Although unable to walk, she credits her long life to “good, clean living.”

Villa Park portrait photographer Catherine Sutfin won the People’s Choice Award at the recent Professional Photo Expo ’90 during the recent 37th Western States National Photographic Convention in Anaheim.

Her entry in the print competition was titled “A Sunday Outing in the Country.” It was selected over hundreds of other entries by professional photographers from Washington, California, Nevada, Oregon, Arizona and Hawaii.

Sutfin won the award on the basis of impact, emotion, story and overall artistic merit.

Huntington Beach resident Wanda Durham was selected Woman of the Year by the Wind Song Charter Chapter of the American Business Woman’s Assn. Besides holding numerous offices and committee chairmanships, she has 21 years of perfect attendance at meetings.
