Dual Elements won the $239,550 National Jockey Club Handicap at Sportsman’s Park Saturday in a race marred by a two-horse spill.

Lettuce Farm’s Honor Medal, a 9-year-old gelding who was making a fourth consecutive start in the 1 1/8-mile event, suffered a broken leg with three furlongs to go. He had to be destroyed.

His jockey, Luis E. Ortega, apparently escaped injury but was taken to MacNeal Memorial Hospital in Berwyn for X-rays.
