Third-seeded Michael Chang was upset by Petr Korda of Czechoslovakia, 6-7 (8-6), 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) Tuesday in the first round of the BMW Open at Munich, West Germany.

Seventh-seeded Guillermo Perez-Roldan of Argentina and Yannick Noah of France also were upset.

“It is frustrating to lose a match like this,” Chang said. “But it was my first on red clay since Paris last year, and it was important to show that I can still play well on the surface.”

Chang, who won the French Open last June, was not able to come up a victory after winning the first-set tiebreaker in the 2-hour 50-minute match.

Chang saved two match points at 15-40 in the 12th game of the final set to force the tiebreaker, in which he jumped to a 3-0 lead. Korda, however, regained his composure and got even, 3-3. Chang double-faulted to give Korda a 6-4 lead, but Korda netted a backhand return before clinching the victory with a cross-court backhand winner.

In other matches, Thomas Muster of Austria ousted Perez-Roldan, 6-4, 6-4; Jens Wohrmann of West Germany eliminated Noah, 6-2, 6-4; top-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden beat Christo Van Rensberg of South Africa, 6-1, 6-0, and Kevin Curren defeated Jorge Lozano of Mexico, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Steffi Graf needed only 47 minutes to beat Laura Lapi of Italy, 6-1, 6-2, in the second round of the Citizen Cup at Hamburg, West Germany.

In another second-round matches, seventh-seeded Laura Gildemeister of Peru defeated Angeliki Kanellopoulou of Greece, 7-5, 6-4.
