Oxnard Mayor Nao Takasugi has been selected by the United States Conference of Mayors to be one of six mayors participating in a conference of American and Japanese mayors in Japan this month.

During the May 12-15 conference, Takasugi will join the mayors of Houston, Tex.; Kansas City, Mo.; Macon, Ga.; Newark, N.J., and Evanston, Ill., to meet with Japanese mayors in Tokyo, Chiba City, Hiroshima, Kyoto and Sapporo.

Takasugi, who sits on the national board of the conference of mayors, said he was told last week about his selection. He said he did not apply for the honor and does not know how he was selected.

The conference is designed to give U. S. mayors the opportunity to study economic development, construction and financing of projects in Japan, officials said.

Travel expenses and conference costs will be paid by the United States-Japan Foundation, which has been established to promote better understanding between the two countries, he said.

Last year, Takasugi and several other U.S. mayors attended a Taiwan meeting.
