Archer Throws a One-Hitter as SDSU Wins

Kurt Archer allowed just one hit in six innings, and Jeff Barry hit a grand slam as San Diego State routed Colorado State, 17-0, Friday in a Western Athletic Conference game cut to seven innings because of the WAC 10-run rule.

Archer, a junior, struck out three to improve to 6-2. Brian Holliday struck out the side in the seventh in relief.

Barry’s grand slam came in a six-run seventh for the Aztecs (34-20, 14-7). Colorado State is 8-36, 3-18.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Point Loma Nazarene clinched the NAIA District III championship for the first time, at Cal Lutheran. The Crusaders hold an 18-13 advantage over three-time champion Westmont with the singles and doubles finals scheduled today. PLNC’s Kim Wright advanced to the singles final by defeating teammate Dion Shillito, 6-0, 6-1. Wright and Shannon Anderson advanced to the doubles final with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Shannon Griffiths and Amy Seaver of Westmont.

Giovanna Carotenuto of U.S. International and Tonya Fuller and Aby Brayton of the University of San Diego have been selected to play in the NCAA individual championships in Gainesville, Fla., May 9-17. Carotenuto, freshman from Italy, is ranked 19th in the NCAA. Fuller is ranked 32nd, Brayton 34th.

MEN’S TENNIS

San Diego State’s Tole Marinkovic, the top-seeded player in the WAC individual tournament, and No. 2 Richard Herrera both won in straight sets and advanced to today’s semifinal at Colorado State. Marinkovic defeated Jason DeFalco of New Mexico, 6-3, 6-4. Herrera defeated Brian Hardin of Brigham Young, 6-2, 6-2.

MEN’S GOLF

San Diego State remained in fourth after the second round of the WAC tournament at Texas El Paso. Doug Carney shot a 72 for a two-round total of 141, good for sixth in the individual standings. Brigham Young leads the team standings at 556. Paul Stankowski of UTEP is at 135 to lead the individuals.

SOFTBALL

Michelle Hagen was five for eight and set a school record with her 55th hit of the season as U.S. International swept a nonconference doubleheader at the University of San Diego, 7-0 and 8-2. USIU is 27-27, USD 25-23. The Gulls’ old season hit record was 52 by Shawna Ervin in 1983.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

UC San Diego, the top-seeded team, won two games to advance in the USA Collegiate Nationals at Brown University. UCSD (23-0-1) defeated Brown, 23-2, and Harvard, 26-4.
