ANAHEIM : Spy Catcher to Talk to Computer Users
Clifford Stoll, an astronomer turned spy catcher, will speak at the Anaheim Convention Center on Wednesday about a yearlong espionage adventure and what computer users can do to avoid the wrath of computer hackers.
In 1989, Stoll helped track down three West Germans who had tapped into U.S. computer systems and gained sensitive military data that was then sold to the Soviet KGB. He will talk about that experience, beginning with what he did as a computer technician at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory when he discovered a 75-cent accounting error that tipped him off to the intruders.
Stoll will also discuss what everyday computer users can do to avoid computer intrusion by both pranksters and professionals.
The lecture is free and will run from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
