CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : OAKLAND : Essay on Gays Wins Scholarship
An Antioch High School senior won a scholarship that rewards understanding and tolerance of gay rights. Cathi Lynn Agua, 18, who is not gay, won the $500 scholarship with an essay saying that many of her fellow students were reluctant to apply for the award, but it “did not scare me.” Four students, none of them gay, sought the award, set up by gay activists a year ago for Contra Costa students in memory of Bobby Griffith, a gay Walnut Creek man who committed suicide seven years ago at the age of 20 because he felt ostracized.
