Maryland sophomore forward Jerrod Mustaf, the team’s leading scorer last season, announced today he would leave the school and apply for next month’s NBA draft.

Mustaf, citing the “wicked sanctions” slapped on the school by the NCAA, said he decided to leave the turmoil created by the penalties and turn professional.

“I made the decision to turn the page on this part of my life and open a new chapter,” Mustaf said at a news conference. “I have no fears about this decision. I fully weighed both the educational and economic factors of this decision. I have made a commitment to my parents and myself to earn my degree within five years.”

Mustaf said he hoped to be taken in the first round.

Mustaf previously said that he would wait until after an NCAA appeal in August to decide whether to remain at Maryland or transfer to another school because of the Terrapins’ upcoming two years of NCAA sanctions.

The 6-foot-10, 240-pound Mustaf averaged 18.5 points per game last season. He was also the team’s second-leading rebounder at 7.7 per game.
