A Malibu man has been ordered to pay $5,850 in fines, penalties and restitution for slum violations at a 160-room hotel he owns in the Westlake section of Los Angeles, according to the city attorney’s office.
Michael I. Math, 39, was sentenced last week in Municipal Court after a no contest plea to 10 violations of various health and building and safety codes at the Sonora Hotel, formerly the New Strand Hotel, the city attorney said in a statement.
Code violations at the hotel, at 729 S. Union Ave., included broken glass, cracked and peeling plaster, missing and defective smoke detectors, hazardous electrical wiring, severe cockroach infestation, and an inoperable fire door, according to Deputy City Atty. Michael Wilkinson.
City Atty. James K. Hahn said Math began making repairs at the building after the criminal complaint was filed last December and that the building is now is in compliance with codes.
