A turboprop commuter plane with 22 people aboard returned to Long Beach Airport and landed without incident Thursday morning after one of its two engines malfunctioned, officials said.

Spokesmen for United Express said the plane had just lifted off at about 7 a.m. on a flight to Sacramento when the trouble developed. The plane landed at 7:39 a.m. and the passengers were transferred to other flights.

The cause of the engine trouble was not immediately determined, the airline said.
