IRVINE : Law Prohibits Heavy Vehicles at Night

Share

Construction workers driving heavy vehicles and equipment through the streets of Irvine will now have their hours curtailed under an ordinance that took effect Thursday.

Under the recently passed ordinance, vehicles may travel to and from construction projects only between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays. On Saturdays, they must confine their driving to between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The law applies to material deliveries, loading, equipment service and maintenance. Personal vehicles are exempt.

Bob Storchheim, manager of building and safety, said that the ordinance followed complaints by residents who said they were disturbed by the increase in early morning construction and truck traffic.

“People were being awakened, sometimes even as early as 4 o’clock,” Storchheim said. He added that work was also being done late into the evening, on Sundays and on holidays.

He said the city tried to persuade developers to comply with voluntary guidelines, but received no cooperation.

A similar law limits construction to the same hours covered by the new ordinance.
