Council Panel Praises Affordable Housing Plan

A Los Angeles City Council committee on Monday praised Nehemiah West, a plan by a nonprofit group to build affordable homes on 12 acres of city-owned land in South-Central Los Angeles. However, the committee delayed a vote on selling the land to the group until a financial report on the $35-million project is finished.
Two large church-based organizations want to build 316 townhouse-style homes on the empty site of the rejected LANCER project to construct a massive trash incinerator. It was abandoned in 1987 amid widespread opposition.
Council members Gloria Molina, Zev Yaroslavsky and Richard Alatorre all indicated that as soon as the financial report is done they will support the plan by the church groups, United Neighborhoods Organization and the Southern California Organizing Committee.
The groups want to buy the city-owned land for $6.6 million, a below-market price.
