Ventura Assessment District Vote

Share

The citizens of Ventura won a major victory May 7 at the City Council in preserving their homes and business protection against unlimited property tax increase as provided for in Proposition 13.

The Times’ story of the battle to make public the facts on the special tax assessment districts before the vote added hundreds of phone calls to the city manager’s office and council members on top of letters, petitions and other phone calls requesting information they had already received.

The demagogic attack on a small number of homeowners, and the efforts to frame the ordinance as only applying to one specific area fell apart when the citizens got to read the ordinance and realized any home or business in the entire city of Ventura was at risk.
