The 1979 Star Trek: The Motion Picture (Channel 13 Monday at 8 p.m.) was the first of the big-screen Trekkie reunions but not the best. For all its spectacular special effects, it really couldn’t compete with “Star Wars” and is sluggish besides. Anyway, it seems there’s a large mysterious cloud of destructive energy zipping toward Earth and only the Starship Enterprise may be able to stop it.

The strong prison drama Brubaker (Channel 5 Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.) launches the first of four Robert Redford films on KTLA; along with Brubaker, Abraham Polonsky’s Tell Them Willie Boy Was Here (Friday) is the best.

Meanwhile, True Grit (Channel 11 Tuesday at 8 p.m.) is the first of four John Wayne movies on KTTV, including Sands of Iwo Jima (colorized Thursday), which won Wayne an Oscar nomination.

Barbara Hershey and Brian Dennehy star in the new TV movie Killing in a Small Town (CBS Tuesday at 9 p.m.), which is based on a true story about a murder among friends that shakes a quiet Texas community.

Last Flight Out (NBC Tuesday at 9 p.m.), another new TV movie based on an actual incident, stars Richard Crenna and James Earl Jones in a drama about a handful of Americans involved in a daring plan to rescue 500 civilians trapped in Saigon at the end of the Vietnam War.

Joan Rivers and Alex Rocco star in the new comedy-mystery How to Murder a Millionaire (CBS Wednesday at 9 p.m.) about a Beverly Hills wife who believes her husband wants to kill her.

Bloodhounds of Broadway (Channel 28 Wednesday at 9 p.m.) is a stylish, period-perfect, diverting but less-than-compelling amalgam of four Damon Runyon stories. The time is New Year’s Eve, 1928, and the stars are Madonna, Rutger Hauer, Matt Dillon, Jennifer Gray, Randy Quaid, Josef Sommer, Esai Morales, Julie Hagerty and Madeleine Potter.

Eleanor, First Lady of the World (Channel 5 Saturday at 8 p.m.) is a fine 1982 TV movie in which Jean Stapleton plays Eleanor Roosevelt in the years after F.D.R.’s death.
