Buses to Carry Backers of New School to Capitol

A coalition of school and community groups, in a last-ditch push for state funds so the Los Angeles Unified School District can buy the Ambassador Hotel site in the Wilshire District, is organizing a bus caravan to Sacramento on Wednesday, when the School Allocations Board is to decide whether to give the district the $73.3 million it is seeking to buy the property.
About 100 people plan to leave district headquarters at 4 a.m. to reach the Capitol by noon.
The event was organized by the 10th and 31st District PTAs and the Los Angeles Crusaders. The historic, now-closed hotel is owned by a partnership headed by developer Donald Trump, who wants to tear it down for commercial development. The district wants the site for a new high school.
In addition, all seven Los Angeles Board of Education members will be in Sacramento today and Wednesday to lobby for the funds.
