Encino’s Greenwood Wins U.S. Open Qualifying Event

Richard Greenwood of Encino led all players with an even-par 144 for 36 holes in a U. S. Open qualifying tournament held Monday and Tuesday at Industry Hills.

Greenwood fired rounds of 74 and 70 and was one of 15 players in the 182-man field to advance to the sectional tournament next month.

Wayne Case of Thousand Oaks, who shot 75-74--149, also advanced. Craig Steinberg, an amateur from Van Nuys, advanced at 72-78--150. The sectional qualifying tournament is June 5 at San Francisco Golf Course. The U. S. Open is June 14-17 at Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Ill.

Heavyweight John Bray of Van Nuys was among 48 boxers named by the U. S. Amateur Boxing Federation to compete for one of 24 berths on the U. S. boxing team for the Goodwill Games.

Bray will fight either June 8 or June 9 in the Goodwill Games Boxing Challenge at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas. A win would qualify Bray for the Goodwill Games; a loss would send him to the U. S. Olympic Festival.

Mara Phillips, a shortstop at Chatsworth High, has signed a letter of intent to play softball at Cal State Northridge.

Phillips, who has led the Chancellors to the City Section 4-A Division semifinals, is batting .446.

The Southern Section softball playoff game between Simi Valley and Mater Dei has been rescheduled for today at 3 p.m. at Rancho Simi Community Park. The quarterfinal-round game originally was scheduled for Thursday but was moved at the request of Mater Dei because of a conflict with the school prom.
