3-A BASEBALL : ROUNDUP : Courtney Pitches In for Tustin

Bill Courtney pitched a five-hitter and struck out nine to lead Tustin High School to a 3-0 victory over Central in a Southern Section 3-A second-round playoff game Tuesday at Tustin.

Courtney (7-0), a senior right-hander, retired 12 of the last 13 batters. He gave up a leadoff single to Roger Ray in the fourth, then retired 11 batters in a row before Ty Bilderback doubled with two outs in the seventh. He got Lenard Gomes to fly out to end the game.

Tustin (24-3) scored a run in the first and two more in the second. Shawn Green had a two-run single in the second to put the Tillers ahead, 3-0. Ryan Relph had a two-out single to score Green in the first. Green started the first with a single, stole second and went to third on a groundout.

Central had runners on second and third with one out in the third, but the runner on second was caught off base, and Courtney got a strikeout for the final out. Tustin plays La Quinta in the quarterfinals on Friday at a site to be determined.
