A Replacement for Bernstein: Due to Leonard Bernstein’s cancellation of his opening night appearence at the Spoleto USA Festival in Charleston, S.C., conductor Julius Rudel has agreed to lead the Friday night orchestral program. The soloists are now mezzo-soprano Tatiana Troyanos and violinist Midori. Bernstein’s publicist, Margaret Carson, said the 71-year old conductor had “a brush with pneumonia, after which his doctor told him to stay home,” from the 14th annual, late-spring festivities in Charleston.
