Coach Lists Lewis Among the Best
Great article on Mark Lewis by Stuart Matthews (Sunday, May 20). However, there was one statement that was either a misquote or a misunderstanding.
When asked how Mark rated with past El Segundo shortstops, my response was: “He is definitely one of the most consistent shortstops that I have had in my 31 years at El Segundo. All Eagle shortstops have come to be measured against Gary King (1964-67) and Tommy Soto (1972-74), and Mark compares very favorably with them for defensive consistency.”
Other great Eagle defensive shortstops have been Bobby Floyd (1960, seven years in the big leagues), basketball great Keith Erickson (1961), Bill Bue (1969), George Brett (1971), Dave Combs (1979), Willy Parsons (1986) and Jeremy Varner (1988). Needless to say, there are a lot of ghosts out there at shortstop at El Segundo’s Recreation Park.
It is a fact that you cannot have a team that wins big without a great defensive shortstop, and all of our championship teams have been no exception. Mark has certainly taken his place as one of the great Eagle shortstops.
