An elderly Ramona woman was killed Thursday afternoon when a truck driver reportedly ran a stop sign and struck her as she attempted to cross a street in her wheelchair, police said.

The 76-year-old victim, whose name was not released Thursday night because the coroner’s office could not locate her family, was pronounced dead at the scene after being broadsided by the pickup truck and dragged about 15 feet.

Maggie Williams, a California Highway Patrol dispatcher, said the elderly woman was on the shoulder of Main Street and crossing 9th Street in Ramona when she was hit shortly before 4 p.m.

Williams identified the truck driver as Gary Hite, 28, of Ramona. She said witnesses reported that Hite failed to obey a stop sign when he struck the woman.

She said, however, that Hite was not cited for a driving offense at the scene, and that the accident was still under investigation.
