SPORTSCOPE : Heat Signs Forward Smith to Contract

The L.A. Heat, which plays at San Diego Saturday night, has signed former Culver City High forward Brad Smith. Smith, 25, has spent the past six years playing in Germany, where he earned a starting spot on the Oberliga Select Team, a national all-star team. He will replace Peter Skouras. Skouras is expected to miss at least two months because he has a fracture in his thigh. Smith was an all-Southern Section selection in soccer, as well as The Times’ Westside Edition running back of the year in football.

John Gerrard, recently acquired by the San Diego Nomads of the American Professional Soccer League West, scored his first goal of the season in a 2-0 victory over the Portland Timbers Saturday. First place San Diego picked up Gerrard when he was cut by the L.A. Heat. He is the assistant men’s soccer coach at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Ascot Raceway’s final Salute to the Indy 500 continues tonight with CMC Motocross at 7:30. Saturday night the CRA sprint-car series runs a special 50-lap main at 8 p.m. Midget cars run Sunday at 7 p.m., with stock-car racing Memorial Day at 6 p.m. Ascot closes this fall when its 15-year lease expires. The track, near the junction of the Harbor and San Diego freeways, is expected to be turned into a business park.

Region 7 of the American Youth Soccer Organization holds sign-ups June 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Westchester Townhouse on Emerson near Manchester. Boys and girls 5-18 are eligible. Information: (213) 215-9024.

Harbor College Coach Jim O’Brien is sponsoring a series of baseball clinics at the Seahawk Field for players 8-18.
