Brazil’s Ayrton Senna broke his own Monaco Grand Prix qualifying lap record to gain the provisional pole position in the first official qualifying session for Sunday’s Formula One race.
Senna’s McLaren-Honda toured the 2.068-mile street circuit at Monte Carlo in 1:21.797. That bettered by more than a half-second his own qualifying mark, set last year, of 1:22.308. He averaged 91.01 m.p.h. on his best lap. Teammate Gerhard Berger of Austria was a distant second at 1:23.001.
