Light-Rail

The article “Gadgets Help Drivers Cope With Congestion” (May 17) reinforces my conviction that Southland drivers need an excellent light-rail transit system more than ever. The prospect of drivers equipping their cars with yet more unnecessary, distracting and potentially dangerous devices is a grim one.

The cases portrayed make me appreciate the five years I lived, worked and commuted in London (and Paris) without the use of a car. I was able to enjoy a brisk walk each morning to my nearest underground “tube” station, thereby obtaining my daily exercise; once seated in comfort, I read countless books, newspapers and magazines while in painless commute to my office job in Piccadilly.

Americans are constantly being exhorted to exercise more, increase literacy, pollute less, reduce stress, cut down commute time and decrease traffic accidents. Providing us with an excellent public rail system--not more freeways--is therefore the superior solution.
