Jarrett Takes Lead on Last Turn to Win
Dale Jarrett, trailing throughout the race, caught Dick Trickle on the final turn of the last lap and beat him to the checkered flag by three feet to win Saturday’s Champion Spark Plug 300 NASCAR stock car race at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C.
Trickle, who started from the pole, had a narrow lead over Jarrett and Harry Gant coming into Turn 3. Jarrett took the lead by ducking inside in Turn 4 and then held off Trickle, with Gant, forced to start 38th because of extensive practice-lap damage to his primary car, finishing third.
Jarrett led only on the last lap, but it was enough to earn $25,475. He averaged 132.337 m.p.h.
Jarrett, who started on the outside of Row 1, got his fourth career Busch Grand National victory and second at Charlotte. He also won in May 1988.
Trickle, running in only his third Busch Series race, took the lead from Tommy Ellis on the 167th lap and held it until Jarrett overtook him.
