$200,000 Netted for 22 Groups

Palos Verdes Junior Women’s Club held its 17th annual spring auction, “Carousel of Dreams,” April 21 for more than 600 guests at the Los Angeles Airport Hilton. Major underwriters were Price-Waterhouse, First Interstate Bank and Palos Verdes Land Holding Co. More than $200,000 was netted and will be distributed to 22 South Bay social services, including 17 local scholarship recipients, Rainbow Services for Victims of Domestic Violence and Harbor UCLA Medical Center’s Children’s Wing. d’Aulan Gentry is president. Jerrie Short was vice president, ways and means, for the event and Becky Freer was auction chairwoman.

* Craft and Folk Art Museum held its “By the Sea” ball May 18 at Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel; guests honored May Co. for its generosity and commitment to the arts. Ceramist Beatrice Wood, whose works will be on exhibit at the museum, received a Lifetime Achievement Award. Net proceeds of $60,000 will enable the museum to continue exhibitions and community programs.

* Earth Communications Office was the beneficiary of a benefit celebrity cricket match and auction May 18 at Will Rogers State park in honor of ECO and TreePeople. The event was sponsored by Virgin Atlantic Airways. The auction netted $5,200 for ECO. In addition, Virgin Atlantic Airways pledged $10,000 each to ECO and TreePeople.

* Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles will receive a check for $12,233.16 from the Los Angeles Board of Realtors, net proceeds raised from its Monte Carlo Night benefit held May 18 at the J. W. Marriott.

* SHARE (Share Happily And Reap Endlessly) volunteer women held the 36th annual Boomtown Party May 19 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and netted $1.5 million, an increase of $300,000 over last year. There were 925 dinner guests and 1,000 theater seats filled. Proceeds will help to support Exceptional Children’s Foundation programs, UCLA Pediatrics, AIDS Consortium, UCLA SHARE Parenting Program, Santa Monica Rape Treatment Center/Stuart House and other charities. Joan Kardashian is SHARE president. Abbe Lane chaired the event.

* Hollywood Sunset Community Clinic recently received a grant of $163,708 from the State of California Department of Health Services to be used for expanded primary care services. Another $163,708 was also received and will be used toward modernization and expansion of clinic facilities. The clinic serves more than 21,000 people each year, providing medical services, counseling, AIDS education for the Latino community (Cara A Cara Project), legal services and parenting education.

* The Shanti Foundation, an HIV/AIDS education and emotional support organization, will receive $14,000 from net proceeds raised at a three-night benefit performance of “The Bingo Game,” produced and directed by Mark Katz at the Roosterfish Saloon in Venice. This was the fourth fund-raiser sponsored by Roosterfish and included a celebrity-auction May 5. The Foundation will use the proceeds for ongoing services for HIV/AIDS patients.
