Mercedes Thompson of Manhattan Beach has received the Outstanding Foreign Language Teacher award from the California Language Teachers Assn. The 1,400-member professional organization includes high schools and two- and four-year colleges. Thompson has taught Spanish at El Camino College since 1984.
Carson High School student Rudolfo Carrillo took third place in the “Ganate el Futuro” (“Win the Future) Southern California scholarship program sponsored by Pepsi-Cola for promising high school students. Carrillo, 17, is in 11th grade. He was awarded a $1,000 scholarship.
